GDC #1: The Early Days of id Software

I like to watch GDC (Game Developers Conference) videos sometimes. I even got the chance to go there in 2019. Stadia was the thing at that time (with the Doom 2016 demo).

I may start a new series of blog posts about the best GDC videos that I watched. Usually post sporadically.

So here is the first one with John Romero where he talked about the early days of ID Software!

Principles



The 2 main reasons why I like this presentation are ID Software games for the first one and the other, principles.

I think a lot of companies or projects today should use more of this kind of pattern (principles).

The time was different and I don’t think all the principles could be used for the big tech / teams today but I find those principles very efficient and I apply some of them (even today).

Doom Guy: Life in First Person






I bought and read this excellent book last July and August.

This is not a technical book but more the story about ID Software and John Romero (autobiography).

If you are looking for technical aspects, Black Books by Michael Abrash and Fabien Sanglard will be better for that and they are also excellent!

Even if I know a good amount of stuff about ID software, I discovered new stuff inside this book. I think it's a must read book!
