Metalhead's grandmother

Black Mirror - Metalhead

"Metalhead," from Black Mirror Season 4, ranks in my top 3 favorite episodes of the series.

Without giving too much away, the story feels like a stark fusion of robotic guard dogs and Terminator movies style dystopia, set against the backdrop of a mysterious societal collapse.

It’s the fifth episode of Season 4 and was uniquely filmed in black and white.

While it's mentioned in the title, this isn't the main focus of the post. The primary topic is robotic delivery.

Robotic Delivery

Above is a short video I filmed of a robotic cart (Coco) delivering some items.

It's not fully autonomous, a remote operator controls the robot.

Today (June 14), I checked Uber Eats and DoorDash but didn't see the option available to use one (When eligible, the app usually indicates that your order will be delivered by a robot instead of a person).

Over the past few days, I haven't had much time or resources to fully explore this feature, but it's clear that robotic delivery like this is likely to become more common in the near future.

As you can see, other companies are also entering the robotic delivery space.

The Metalhead comparison might be a stretch, but if we follow that line of thought, the "grandfather" would be Boston Dynamics' BigDog, the very robot that inspired the Black Mirror episode.

Sawtelle

If you're a foodie and enjoy Japanese-American cuisine, Sawtelle is a must-visit known for its vibrant mix of multicultural restaurants and boutique shops. Here's the Google Maps link showing the area, with plenty of dining and retail options on both sides of the street.

If you stop by, chances are you'll spot one of the delivery robots in action, just like in the video above.
