Twitch

Hello!

Here is my first day at Twitch somewhere in February 2018 and this blog post will be about my experience there. It was a warm welcome with a lot of on-boarding and new hire orientation meetings during the first week. Below was my first base setup which will change a lot after a couple of days.

Embarcado II

Above is the view from the first office I worked at. It was at Embarcadero II which was not the main office.
It was managed by WeWork and I was really impressed. First time a job provided me with those kinds of services. Next to the restroom, there was a shelf with all resources needed: any kind of medicine pills for headache, stomach ache, cough, cold & flu available, bandages, paper/pencils, batteries...

Food catering everyday and free coffee. Random fridges spread across the floor with snacks and beverages like water, soda, tea and orange juice. Pizza everyday except Friday at 5pm:

New HeadQuarter

The main office was on Bush street (225) and it was in the direct line to my apartment (Nob Hill area). This office was too small so they moved to a new office close to the previous one (225->350) to regroup everyone.

I was already impressed with the previous studios and this one level-up by 10 compared to those. Kitchen floor with all kinds of food such as salad bar, desserts, chicken section and pizza oven. At least 3 different food types for every meal (e.g. vegan plate, chicken plate, pork plate) + pizza or calzone for lunch and dinner.

Every floor has a section with 2 coffee machines (normal & decaf), big fridges full of snacks and beverages, drawers with candy, chip and "healthy food". But on the second floor next to the interview rooms was my best buddy, this coffee machine:

Next to this coffee machine, there is a pastry shelf...

Below was my setup where I was working with multiple devices:

Food

This section is dedicated to foodies!

Every Thursday, we had an all-hands meeting which was the best day for me. Why ??? Brunch !!!

Aside (aparté): The word "brunch" is a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch. Portmanteau: multiple words are combined into a new word: BReakfast + lUNCH.

Because of this meeting, they replaced breakfast and lunch with brunch (best omelettes there)! You can customize your omelette but I always asked "with everything" to simplify the order.

Here is a compilation of all Twitch food pictures I took:

Happy Hours

Every Friday, there was a Happy Hour with arcades, board games, babyfoot, console games (e.g. Game Cube), ping-pong table, computer gaming room, drinks served by barmaids and sofas!

Cookie of the Day!

Kitchen had a section with different flavor cookies jars (e.g. macadamia, chocolate) that changed everyday. Those cookies were often sweet, fat and salty at the same time. A dangerous good combinaison!

One of my friends / co-worker also organized a cookie meeting once a week for about 15 minutes where some co-workers from different teams were talking about random topics (e.g. games, projects, movies).

std::move

Above is my home setup during the lockdown since we worked remotely and below, it's some pictures from that time at the office. Yes it was pretty empty!

During that time, I was working closely with a specific team and the direction changed overtime.
Result: some co-workers from this team left. Also the organization I was working for applied the "2 birds 1 stone" pattern on one big project which I understand but I disagreed with that. So after almost 4 years, I left Twitch last November. It was an amazing experience that I recommended to anyone! I wish and hope it will come back like the same experience I got in the past!!!

Big Thanks to Robin and Thanks to all friends / co-workers that I worked with!

Thanks for reading,

JS.
