Post-Mortem 2023

2023

Happy New Year!!!

Above is a photo of the beer called "La fin du monde" which means "The end of the world".

It seems that we survived to the end of the world for 2023 so I had this beer to celebrate that!

This beer, a strong triple blonde at 9% and it originated from Quebec state (where I am from) has a different meaning: "La Fin du Monde is a Belgian-style tripel and bottle conditioned golden ale introduced in July 1994. The name is claimed to derive from the European explorers' belief that they had reached the end of the world when they arrived in the Americas."

I finally watched the Oppenheimer movie. It was good but I think I prefer Christopher Nolan 200X movies like Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight.

I think I only watched one comedy movie in 2023 if we exclude that the world right now is like a big comedy show. There is a quote attributed to Mark Twain that reflects this situation: "Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason."

For the movie, it was BlackBerry and it's about the rise and fall of the Blackberry phone. Also highly inspired of the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley

For the TV Mini Series, I mainly focused on real events like Chernobyl, Painkiller, The Pharmacist and Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife.

Like I said last year: "2023 will be a year of updates". It was!

I got a new job and I moved from San Francisco to Santa Monica / L.A.

Also, I did a lot of updates on my website and apps and it will be the next part.

What went well

- I added an alternative version of my website in a lightweight style with no javascript (except for the onerror webp -> jpg). My tool will automatically convert any page if it's possible and generate it into this version. You can toggle if you see a link like that Alternative Version at the beginning of the web page.

- Replaced the blog post voice by 2 versions (1 female / 1 male)

- Added blog post audio playlist (2 versions):

Audio playlist here (female voice)

Audio playlist here (male voice)

- Archive page: I got the idea when Google decided to disabled some of my applications on the Google Play store which I think it's a strange design decision. After 20 years and more, I can still run my old applications on my Windows 10-11 computers. For Android, some phones will not see my applications depending on which API level on the Google play store but can be downloaded from the archive page.

"We've detected that 7 of your apps are targeting an old version of Android. To provide users with a safe and secure experience, Google Play requires all apps to meet target API level requirements before"

That doesn't sound like a safe and secure experience but more a lack of architecture experience...

- Updated MisterPug with some minor features (1.1)

- Updated Klang with new keywords and tested with The Legend of Zelda / A Link to the Past repository

- Optimized Quad Delays for better performance by adding Intrinsics / SIMD instructions

- Created a new album called PlaceHolders

- Added a Youtube video gallery, changelog and a sitemap

What went wrong

- I think I found my what really grinds my gears and it's not that new software like applications or games contains bugs, it's when they remove important features like the "uncombine taskbar" on Windows 11 and re-active later this feature but in a broken mode like the slack or paint examples below:.

- First time in my life, I got a blue screen on every Windows 10-11 computer that I used like my personal computers and the 2 computers for the jobs.

Delete files on Windows 10 pro will delete the files but still display on the monitor. Disappear if we do a refresh (F5).

WSL overwrites my host file configuration.

Visual Studio 2022 update broke Visual Assist Keyboard Shortcut. A rollback of VS2022 will mess up the switched theme (e.g dark->light), remove configuration...

- Youtube Download youtube video only display the latest video in the selection but shows 144 videos downloaded

This one is interesting. Who got the idea to switch the option order when we click on a channel like before: Go to channel, join and subscribe. Now it's the opposite by adding multiple extra steps just to visit a youtube channel...

- Messenger froze multiple times on my phone when switching between apps (can't scroll), I needed to "stop" the application and restart.

Facebook notification (top right bell) takes forever to display a simple notification like "reacted to your video or photo". I could load a Quake 3 level with the same amount of time.

After a long time, I reused my Oculus Quest 2. I got stuck forever with the 3 dots on Beat Saber without any message so I decided to update the firmware, account and software apps. I was like a pirate where I have one eye for the Quest and the other eye on my phone for confirmation code and other stuff like that.

- I bought a new Android phone 1.5 years ago and I got the message above. These messages disappeared after 2 weeks and were able to update.

I didn't write all the bugs I got during that year. Otherwise it will take a lot of pages but we really need a revolution in terms of performance and stability in software development. It's broken more than before!

What to try / continue

2024 will also be a year of updates and very similar to the previous year:

- I would like to focus on some existing projects I did by adding more features or improvements

- I have a good stack of books to read and I will also revisit some books that I read

- Maybe 1-2 tiny projects

- Release a blog post every month and probably add some topic about movies since I am close to some filming locations here

- Experiment, experiment and experiment...

2024

- The Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTAV) source code was leaked around XMAS 2023. It seems there are ~645 F words and ~700 WTF words inside the code base / content. I will not be surprised to see some mods or funny videos appearing on the internet in 2024.

I guess a lot of fluctuation will happen in 2024 in various sectors (e.g. economy) but we probably live in the best time throughout history.

To conclude, I will quote Oh Dae-Su from the Korean Movie called Oldboy:

"Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone."

Thanks for reading,

JS.
