Microwave and Quebec II

  • by Jean-Sebastien Royer

Microwave

I will not talk about microwave ovens but more the trend that I think we have now (since at least the last 6-8 years).

I may become too old or act like the Grumpy cat, but a lot of new productions today in movies, gamings or other entertainment are just the leftovers that will go directly into the microwave oven to be warm-up and serve with less taste compared to the first / original versions.

They do and will do a sequel, prequel, remake, reboot, remaster, spin-off, crossover, extended, multi-verse and all other ways or apply the current trend to milk a franchise until this one dies and no one cares anymore about that.

No more classics... more like a frozen dish that we will forget after a couple of days or months.

For the warm-up, we just need to see some new trailers / teasers that will use some old music from the 70s to 90s but they will slow down the speed and "create" a nostalgia effect which sounds to me more like a cassette tape getting stuck while playing.

Another trend that I am not a big fan of is they like to create a documentary and extend it into 6-8 episodes where I saw the same stuff in 199X-200X in one episode of 45 minutes. And when I say "they", I mean multiple Video On Demand (e.g. Netflix, HBO) will create their own docuseries version.

I'm wondering if we are not in a junk food time cycle where everything needs to be consumed like fast food ?

For the business model, it sounds "right". Less risk, less cost, no real innovation. Just need to re-warm it and release it.

With the rise of AI where it will increase the content production with auto-generation/translation, I'm really curious how we will handle it.

I hope we are close to the end of this cycle.

The good thing is when I was young, I mostly saw my movies in french since I lived in Quebec city. So now, I spend some time to re-watch some original classics instead of this junk food leftover !

Quebec II

Just like last summer, I spent a week in my hometown of Quebec City during the break.

Below are some pictures from some places I went and I highly recommend to try:
- FEQ (The Offspring)
- Chez Bicep BBQ
- La Souche (Microbrasserie)
- Brulerie Limoilou
- Steak Avenue
... and a lot of poutines around the city

Round 3 this winter or next summer !
